Flying with your Ferrets

This information is as of March 2016. I called various airlines regarding traveling with my 2 ferrets this summer and this is the information I gathered….

Note that NO airlines will allow ferrets in the cabin – not even as an Emotional Support Animal. Unfortunately, most airlines are beginning to move towards not allowing any pets in the cabin at all.

United Airlines:

  • Cargo Hold: Yes
    • Pressure and temp controlled
  • Cabin: No
  • Book: Anytime from 1 year to 24 hours before
  • Health Certificate: Not required for domestic travel (always required for international)
  • Multiple Ferrets allowed in Same Kennel: Yes
  • Kennel Size:
    • Small pets: Pet must be able to move freely and have adequate airspace. Kennel must have a solid floor, open mesh/grate on all 4 sides, and a water container.
    • No specific size limit, Med kennel ok
    • No food; Water bottle ok
  • Cost: $75 per kennel each way

Alaska Airlines:

  • Cargo Hold: Allowed
    • Pressure and temp controlled
  • Cabin: No
  • Book: Anytime – up to 24 hours before you leave
  • Health Certificate: Yes, required even for domestic travel
  • Multiple Ferrets allowed in the Same Kennel: YES
  • Kennel Size:
    • XS: Height 15”, Width 16″, Length 21″
    • S: Height 19”, Width 20”, Length 27”
    • M: Height 23”, Width 22”, Length 32”
  • Cost: $100 per ferret each way
  • Food and Water: Must have 2 plastic bowls for food and water clipped into the kennel (See link below) feed prior to checking in!

Delta Airlines:

  • Cargo Hold: Yes
    • Pressure and temp controlled
  • Cabin: No. As of March 2016 Delta does not allow ANY pets in the cabin.
  • Book: Can only book your pet’s reservation of 13 days in advance at the earliest!
  • Health Certificate: Not required for domestic travel (always required for international)
  • Multiple Ferrets allowed in the Same Kennel: Yes
  • Kennel Size:
    • Small pets: IATA kennel standards
      • No size limit; med kennel ok
      • Advise placing extra wire mesh around the cage openings to prevent them from sticking their paws out.
