One of the concerns that people have when switching their ferrets to raw is their consumption of bone. As long as the bone they are eating is raw (totally uncooked), they are perfectly capable of crunching them up to a small enough size that they can easily digest them. Below is a comparison of dissected scat from kibble and a digested mouse. You can clearly see the size of the bone fragments that end up passing through their system. Their digestive acids also “round” off the edges of said fragments as they absorb the needed nutrients and minerals from the bone. You can also see how completely the ferrets digestive system breaks down the mouse. There is virtually nothing left other than bone, teeth and fur. The kibble on the other hand comes out almost the same as it goes in. This shows how much indigestible content is in your average kibble and why they need to eat so often when on kibble.
